Navigating the Waves of Deployment: Finding Strength in Absence

As a military spouse, the journey through deployment can often feel like navigating stormy seas. Currently undergoing another deployment, I find myself reflecting on the countless emotions that accompany this interesting time. While my husband serves our country, I operate a bar and grill in our small town, which offers me with a feeling of determination and keeps me occupied by organizing events, socializing, and developing relations. Nevertheless, there are times when his absence feels tremendously heavy, challenging my mental strength and stimulating the relationships we have built together. In sharing my story, I hope to share light on the experiences of being a military spouse during deployment while offering encouragement for those who find themselves in comparable circumstances.

The Realty of Absence

The truth is deployments can be rough. The unoccupied chair at dinner, running errands by yourself, the silent phone calls, and the missed milestones can all weigh deeply on the heart. Even though I am fortunate to be surrounded by encouraging friends and family who truly care about us, there are days when lonesomeness sneaks in. It’s through these moments that I remind myself of the promise we made to each other. If you too feel this way at this moment… know you are not alone. Yes, some days feel harder than others; recognizing these feelings is essential. It’s okay to miss him; it’s okay to feel like you are doing life alone. This reaction will pass.

Finding Strength in Community

Operating a full-service restaurant has been my salvation throughout this deployment. Even when times have felt rough, it has kept me busy and allows me to engage with others in our small community who share their own stories of love and separation. This establishment has become a gathering place where happiness fills the air and friendships flourish over meals shared. In those moments when I feel alone or as an individual standing in an empty room, I am now surrounded with friends and appreciating our time together. They remind me that I am not alone in this journey and there are numerous others walking these similar paths.

Mental Health Matters

Throughout current and past deployment experience, my mental health has been tested more than ever. On certain challenging days, I find comfort in self-care practices—whether its journaling my thoughts, coloring with a coloring book, watching a new show, or taking time to do something for myself. These small acts of kindness towards myself create space for healing and reflections. Furthermore, pursuing encouragement when needed has been helpful such has chatting through my feelings helps me process responses.

The Power of Hope

One significant lesson I have learned during this journey is the power of hope. Though it might seem indescribable at times, holding onto hope becomes a guiding light through the darkest nights of separation. I remind myself that every day brings us closer to the reunification. Each moment that we are apart is an opportunity for growth both individually and as a couple. Our bond may be tested but it will emerge stronger on the other side.

While being a military spouse during deployment presents distinctive challenges—isolation, mental health struggles, and feelings of incompetence. It also offers intense opportunities for personal growth and strength. As we navigate this journey together from afar, let us hold onto hope and treasure the love that binds us despite distance. Remembering that “this too shall pass” can offer comfort when we need it most.
